Afternoon weather update

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Currently, there are scattered showers and a few embedded storms with downpours across New England and Eastern NY.  A huge area of heavy precipitation over the New york City area is moving east-northeast  toward the Southern NE coast.  Showers and storms will continue to move from west to east this afternoon and evening.  This is associated with a cold front.  Scattered showers and storms will continue into the overnight across the region with some downpours possible.

Conditions are becoming more favorable for a few storms to develop across parts of the region.  The Surface Cape Values (Convective Available Potential Energy) is between 500 J/KG to 1000 J/Kg for most of Southern New England, and Eastern New York.  The surface based lifted index is very low across parts of Southern New England and Eastern NY, with values such as -3 and -4.  There is some wind shear between the surface and 6 km across parts of Northern NE, Most of Southern NE, and Eastern NY.  The highest wind shear is across Eastern NY and Southern Vermont.   Conditions are becoming more favorable for storm development.  If we get more breaks of sun,  some severe storms may develop across parts of the region this afternoon and evening.  The biggest threat through today and overnight will be the heavy rain and possible wind damage.
